Moving House: Packing Tips
No move is easy: the list of things that need to be done before the big day ranges from cancelling utilities and scheduling the move to packing up your belongings and getting your pets ready for the move, and it can all quickly add up to be overwhelming. Whether you’re relocating across the province or staying within the city, here are a few packing tips to make your move go smoother from a team of Edmonton real estate agents who has helped hundreds of families transition from one house to another.
It is almost impossible to pack if you do not have the right materials to do so. Make sure you have plenty of bubble wrap, boxes, paper for fragile items, and strong packing tape in an easy-to-use dispenser. A tape dispenser will allow you to avoid picking at the end of the tape when you need it, saving you time and sanity, and many good quality tape dispensers can be used easily with one hand.
Although it might feel satisfying to fully pack a whole room, you will most likely still be living in the house as the packing is going on. Pack the least used items in each room (such as seasonal items), then cycle back through each room as moving day draws nearer to pack other items. Have a marker handy to label your boxes as you go: since you’re packing early, it’s likely by the time you need to unpack these boxes you may have forgotten what they contain!
Plan for where things will go in the new house. While packing, keep in mind your current home’s layout in comparison to the layout and flow of your new property. Are you loosing or gaining a room? If your den is going to be significantly smaller, where will your vast book collection go? Organizing your boxes based on where they will go in the new home will help you edit the clutter easier in the next step.
As much as possible, get rid of anything you will not need as you are packing. Old magazines, unused books, outgrown clothes should be dealt with now appropriately. It can be tempting just to “throw them in a box”, but it’s better to throw out or donate things you don’t need before you move. With a bit of planning, some charities will even send trucks to pick-up donated items directly. The more you get rid of now, the less you will have to pack, move and unpack.
When you are done packing and sealing each box, label the top and front with the general contents of the box, and where it should go in the new house. This will allow you and the movers to the boxes in the correct locations as they unload to save you the time and energy of shuffling boxes around while unpacking. It also means you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for quickly in a pinch if you need it.
