Flashback to 1950s Edmonton

Monday, October 25th, 2010

visitorsguide2A few days ago we discovered some old Edmonton Visitors’ Guides from the 1950s filled with photographs, information and statistics from the era. What better way to show the changing face of our great city over the last 60 years than through the lens of real estate?

Edmonton Today vs. Edmonton in the 1950s

The population of the City of Edmonton in 1955 was 209,000 people. The 2008 Edmonton census shows we’ve grown to over 752,000 people since then. If we include the greater Edmonton area, we’ve grown from 232,000 people in 1955 to over 1.1 million today!

Edmonton has expanded to over 6 times its 1950s size: in the 1950s the city covered 110 km2, and today we’ve grown to over 680 km2. What’s most impressive is how well our ratio of parks and green space has remained high: in 1955 Edmonton boasted 2,500 acres of parkland, and today that figure has increased to over 27,400 acres, including the Saskatchewan River Valley parks system which is the largest stretch of urban parkland in North America and is 22 times larger than New York City’s Central Park.

Downtown Edmonton circa 1955.

Taking a look at real estate in particular, in 1955 Edmonton contained around 58,000 homes: today that number has increased to over 353,000 homes including single family houses, condos, townhouses and apartments. The average cost of a home back then was around $13,000; in 2009 a single detached home in Edmonton sold for an average of $366,000. A search shows the size of homes has increased as well: in the 1950s homes in Edmonton were an average of 900 square feet, while today the average house is closer to 1,400 square feet.

Interested in more current Edmonton statistics? Take a look at our Edmonton real estate news page for the most up to date real estate statistics. You can get stats for the city as a whole or drill down and look at the numbers neighbourhood by neighbourhood.

If you’re interested in demographic information, you can explore the most recent Edmonton census data at the new Statistics Edmonton website.

It’s amazing to look back at the numbers and these old photographs and realize how much Edmonton has grown over the last sixty years. What will our city look like in another sixty years?

Edmonton Communities – A Place To Socialize

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Not sure what Edmonton neighbourhood you want to live in? Sometimes, it is not always about the features of the home, but rather the type of community the area fosters. A great way one can get to know the area is through the Community League. Edmonton’s Federation of Community Leagues is well established and offers unlimited opportunities to socialize and get to know your existing neighbours and/or to get a feel for potential new neighbours.

EFCL’s purpose is to foster healthy neighborhoods and sustainable community leagues in Edmonton by providing advice, support and coordination of the community league movement in Edmonton. No other organization in North America has such a well developed system of volunteers within communities that provides sports, recreation, culture, and educational opportunities while addressing transportation and land use issues.”

CommunityChallengeThis month, all Edmonton Community Leagues are actually participating in a Community Challenge complete with a Neighborhood Cleanup on June 5, a 24 Hour Bike Tune Up on June 12, and a Canned Food Sculpture Competition on June 26.  Teams of all ages representing a number of Community Leagues throughout the City of Edmonton will participate with the potential of earning a community fund that will directly benefit their Community League.

On August long weekend, they will be involved in Heritage days and on Sept 18, 2010 there will by a Green Challenge to promote and encourage sustainable living initiatives.

To learn more about the community you are planing to buy your Edmonton Home or to get involved in your existing community, visit the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues today. Participate, Volunteer and enjoy meeting your neighbours.
